KING’S COLLEGE LONDON, STRAND CAMPUS
The 2008 4G
Forum will be held in the Strand Campus of King's College London. The King’s
College London Strand Campus is situated in the Centre of London, on
the Northern Bank of the River Thames, about ½ mile West-Southwest of
St. Paul’s Cathedral and ½ mile East-Northeast of Trafalgar Square.
The Strand Campus is located a few minutes walk from popular tourist
attractions such as Covent Garden, The Royal Courts of Justice,
Somerset House, The South Bank, Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and
Piccadilly Circus.
The address of
the Strand Campus is: King’s College London, Strand, London WC2R 2LS.
MEETING ROOM
Referring to
the following map of the Strand Campus, the meeting will be held in
the “Edmond J. Safra Lecture Theatre” in the King’s Building.
TRANSPORT
There are two
major London airports: Heathrow and Gatwick. There are also two
smaller London airports, that are quite some distance from London:
Stansted and Luton. Furthermore, there is a very small airport called
London City Airport, which is quite close to the Centre of London.
Finally, the Eurostar train service between Paris/Brussels and London
terminates at London Waterloo: a short walk across Waterloo Bridge
from the Strand Campus.
Heathrow
Airport
Taxis in
London are very expensive. The cost of a taxi from Heathrow Airport to
King’s College should be ~£60 (€90/US$120), with a journey time of
somewhat over an hour. However, cost and duration might increase
sharply dependent on circumstance (congestion etc.). Recommended means
to get to Central London are the Heathrow Express (cost
£14.50/€21/US$29 one way, duration 15 minutes), London Underground
(a.k.a. Metro/Subway/Tube) Piccadilly Line (cost £4/€6/US$8 one way,
duration ~1 hour), and a number of coach services (the largest being
National Express). Note that most services leave from Heathrow
Terminals 1, 2, 3, although there is a frequent free bus transfer
between Heathrow Terminal 4 and Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3. At night,
there is an all-night bus service between Heathrow and Central London,
the N9 bus.
The Heathrow
Express and many coach services terminate at London Paddington. Some
coach services also terminate at London Victoria. To get to King’s
College Strand Campus from London Paddington you may take the Bakerloo
Line (London Underground) Southbound in the direction of Elephant and
Castle, and exit at Embankment Station and either walk from there or
take the Circle/District Line East to Temple Station. If you are
heading to Central London on the Piccadilly Line, one of many possible
routes to King’s is to transfer at South Kensington Station on to the
Circle/District Line Eastbound, then exit at Temple Station. You may
alternatively leave the Piccadilly Line at Holborn Station and walk
South-Southeast along Kingsway to King’s.
Gatwick
Airport
The
recommended means for transport from Gatwick to Central London are
train and coach. Train services are to London Victoria and are run by
Gatwick Express (£14.90/€22/US$30 one way, duration 35 minutes) and
Southern Trains (£8/€12/US$16 one way, duration 35-40 minutes).
Coaches are run by a range a companies, the largest again being
National Express. Taxi from Gatwick to Central London is not
recommended as this is likely to cost well in excess of
£70/€100/US$140. London Victoria station is a few minutes travel by
London Underground from King’s College Strand Campus: take the
Circle/District Line Eastbound to Temple Station.
London
Stansted
You can get to
Central London via the Stansted Express train service (cost
~£15/~€23/~US$30 one way, duration 45 minutes); there are also a range
of coach services to Central London from London Stansted. Trains to
Central London terminate at London Liverpool Street Station, which is
extremely well connected and is located just to the Northeast of the
“City of London” financial district. From Liverpool Street Station,
you may take the Central Line Westbound to Holborn, and exit there for
King’s.
London
Luton
You can get to
Central London by train (Midland Mainline, or London Thameslink).
There are also a range of coach services to London from Luton Airport.
